Rehearsal Schedule for Monday, April 28th – Rehearsal at Athey Creek Middle School, 2110 Brandon Pl, West Linn, OR 97068  in the Band Room

Here is the schedule for next week’s rehearsal:

  • 7:00 Saint-Saëns III, II, I IV
  • 7:15 Beethoven
  • 7:45 Magnard III, II, I, IV, V
  • 8:30 String Sectional

Things to work on this week:

  • Beethoven – mm. 52 – 74 celli keep working on this spot and the others with goal of better ease and forward motion
  • mm. 102-letter E – strings (except the firsts) when you have the running eighth notes work for good intonation and phrasing
  • 3rd bar of letter F to m. 202 – celli have the slurred eighth notes again – keep working on same things as above

  • Saint-Saëns – mvmt. 1 at letter B is very imitative, please count carefully and be confident that you know where your part fits in
  • m. 205 remember the ritard and then back to tempo in m. 206
  • mvmt. 2 think long line and not too short on the notes in spite of the dots
  • mvmt. 3 – a reminder that I conduct patterns (mostly of 4, but also some of 3) to show the phrasing in I beat to the bar
  •  the slower section beginning at letter D it helps to think your subdivision of 3 with the ties over the bar line in both the accompaniment as well as the melody
  •  mvmt. 4 – while I am going to conduct this in 1 to the bar, I will beat a prep measure in 2 to assist the first violins at the start of the movement. Still would like to have the tempo at 84 for the measure.
  • Firsts and violas have this melody the most, so our tempo really depends on your being able to comfortably execute at that speed.
  • Letter C to D is a spot that needs some work still – with the imitation and also m. 215 to letter D in the first violins (Dan has a fingering for you), flutes join that figure at m. 225
  • Flutes join that figure at m. 225, m. 272 to 287 imitation in the strings and winds (careful counting here, went well last week)
  •  m. 446 I will beat out the G.P. bars in this section before letter H;
  • m. 455 we are in 2 and slower at mm. 455 we are in 2 and slower
  • Magnard:    mvmt. 1 – beginning to letter C is coming together but needs a bit more work in getting the puzzle put together; strict tempo and rhythmic accuracy.
  • m. 205 remember the ritard and then back to tempo in m. 206
  • Mvmt. 3 – likewise here from the beginning to letter B. please remember the tempo fluctuations from 2 before letter D to letter E where we return to the opening tempo.
  • Last three bars watch for the allargando in 4.
  • Mvmt. 5 – is coming along well. Letter G is the spot where those still playing in 6/16 need to be steady in tempo so that the folks in 2/8 will coordinate correctly.

Thank you all for your continued hard work. Only three rehearsals to go before the concert. I look forward to seeing you Monday.

Things to work on last week:

  • Beethoven – celli – the eighth note passages mm. 53-74 and also after letter F, nice connected slurs and be careful get off the ties right in time so we keep the forward momentum; at mm. 102 to letter E low strings and then later the 2nds on these off the string running eighth notes think of the outlines of the chords you are arpeggiating and keep the bow stroke short and close to the string. The same kind of passage returns at m. 230 for the celli who are joined by the basses and violas (in 16th notes though) for the last two bars. One final passage at letter I
  • Saint-Saens = mvmt. I – reminder that there is a stretch of the tempo at m. 205; later at letter I at m. 252 winds be careful in the counting so we get these little upward eighth note motives lining up correctly
  •  Mvmt. II – please remember to think of the long line and not make the short notes too short as with the slow tempo this can break things up. We did some good work on this last week.
  • Mvmt. IV – the tempo for this movement is really going to be dependent on how fast the firsts and violas  can handle the main melody. I think we can do the dotted half note at 84 but want all to be comfortable with it. I suggest a bit of slow practice but with the bow stroke the length you will do at tempo and gradually work it up with a metronome. As Dan suggested last rehearsal, keep the bow close to the string and keep it light in general. Target tempo for 4th movement of Saint-Saens: dotted half = 84
  • Magnard  – mvmt. I – work out the rhythms with the 16th note triplets so you are comfortable with them (like 2 bars before letter C – firsts, flutes, clarinets; 2 bars before letter I bassoons, celli, bass)
  • Mvmt. II – we will work out the tempo fluctuations between letter C and D so that all are clear on it. Please remember that the last 3 measures of his movement will be in 4.
  • Mvmt. V – the challenge here is to get comfortable with the meter and the notation in 16ths rather than the more normal 8ths . we will work on the imitation that builds to letter E. the other spot is at letter G with the two different meters combined (firsts, flutes and later the trumpet in duple meter against the triple meter in rest of the orchestra). It has been shaping up well.

Tempi and Performance Notes

Beethoven:
– in 2, half note = 84;
– low strings look at m. 105 as the running eighth notes begin there.
-2nd violins take the pattern starting in m. 133, also look at m. 244ff.
– Celli, Bass at letter I.
– Overall this overture is very straightforward and will be a pleasure to play! 🙂

Magnard:
– mvmt. I – quarter note = 84.
Letter C 2nds and Va. divisi the chords into double stops (inside/outside)

– mvmt. II quarter note = 60. 1st oboe has a lovely English horn solo

– mvmt. III in 2, half note = 100.
Strings please look this over as has a good deal of eighth notes sometimes in imitation.

– mvmt. IV quarter note = 120

– mvmt. V in 2 dotted eighth note = 138 so pretty brisk!
All will need to get used to reading in this meter of 6/16.
Some parts switch to 2/8 as the meter at letter G creating cross-rhythms but at letter H all return to the 6/16 meter.
Very end of the mvmt. is in slow 3 of the Sarabande at quarter note = 60.

This composer is one that I know both the orchestra and the audience will enjoy meeting and I look forward to performing it with you 🙂!

Saint-Saens:
– mvmt. I opens in 6/4 (again one needs to adjust to this unusual meter) conducted in 2 with the dotted half = 69.
– at the short cut-time sections the quarter note will stay the same.
– at letter B half note = 88.

– mvmt. II in 3/8 the eighth note = 60.
There is an English horn part in the second oboe for this mvmt.

– mvmt. III is in 1 with the dotted half note= 120 which is fairly brisk 🙂.
– I conduct phrases when the music is in one, so you will see me use patterns (mostly 4, sometimes in 3) to reflect that. It helps folks keep track of the counting better in my experience.
– At letter D the tempo slows to dotted half note = 88 (at least in the score doesn’t change to the end.)

mvmt. IV – the composer has this marked at dotted quarter note = 200! This may be somewhat faster than we are able to navigate, so please do look this mvmt over so we have the best chance of success!
– At letter H the Andantino 3/8 is in 3; then at the tempo I in 6/8 back to speed.
